LARP

A live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically act out their characters’ actions. The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by the real world while interacting with each other in character.

We currently plan to have three LARPs, including a sword & sorcery combat LARP currently in creation by ENC.

LARP at epic nerd camp

SUPERNATURAL

A “Supernatural” inspired LARP that utilizes local lore from the American Revolution, which has left some restless spirits and odd happenings in this remote Pennsylvania town.

CTHULHU

Even during a decade of loosening social mores, Scranton in the 1920’s had a reputation as an anything-goes city. Vice flourished, and despite prohibition, booze flowed easily. Saloons and gambling dens operated with near-impunity, as did the brothels where disorderly women plied their trade in bawdy houses in Central City’s tenderloin district. The largest distillery in the US operated in a maze of warehouses, and over two dozen brothels catered to both the coal mine workers, and their wealthy owners alike.
When a wealthy coal baron’s daughter turns up dead, no one is sure what to make of it. No one is claiming responsibility for the peculiar and gruesome death. The girls on the streets could tell you what’s been going on, but no one is listening. Now the police are paying attention to the string of brutal murders, a serial killer is on the loose, and things are getting stranger.

BATTLE GAMES

Also known as “combat games” or “boffer games”, these are non-roleplaying games based around using foam padded implements representing swords, shields,  and other gear that is designed to safely come into realistic physical contact with the players. An objective, such as capture the flag, will be played out with all the fun that comes from smacking someone with a foam sword!
Some examples of the games we’ll be playing (that we found on this AMAZING LIST are:

Battle Games

BRIDGE BATTLE

Bridge Battles are team games with any amount of players. You must destroy the opposing team just like a normal team battle, but the trick is that your are on a bridge and can fall into the waters below.  You are safe to stand on the land or the bridge, but if any part of your body touches the water are, you are instantly killed (i.e. fell off the bridge). Variant: The team who makes it to the other side of the bridge first wins.

FETCH

Fetch works best with 5 to 10 people. One player is the thrower the rest are the fetchers. All fetchers start in a line 5 feet apart from each other. The thrower stands five feet behind them. The thrower then tosses a rock over their heads as far as he or she can. When the rock hits the ground the thrower shouts ‘GO’ and the fetchers can begin to move (false starters die instantly). Their job is to fetch the rock and bring it back to the thrower. (The rock must be placed in the throwers hand, not tossed to him or her.) The fetchers are fully allowed to kill and/or maim each other.

NECROMANCER

Necromancer is a very interesting game involving treason and should be played with twenty or more players. Two teams are made, a team of peasants and a team of zombies. One out of every five peasants is a zombie. Before combat begins all the peasants draw a piece of paper from a hat. One piece of paper has the word “necromancer” on it. Whoever gets the necromancer is secretly on the team of the zombies. One zombie looks at each peasants paper to find out who the necromancer is and tells the other zombies (the peasants should never know which one is the necromancer).

zombie game

Battle then begins. When anyone dies, peasant or zombie, they fall to the ground. The necromancer can “raise” them by touching their chest or back. Anyone raised is now a zombie and fights for the zombie team. If the peasants figure out who the necromancer is and kills him or her all the other zombies die and the peasant team wins. If the necromancer and his zombies succeed in converting all the peasants they win.

ESCAPE  ROOM

Our magician/magic instructor can sometimes get a bit carried away in the search for his protégé. Usually, our magic lessons go off without a hitch, but sometimes he likes to “test” his students’ skills by locking them in the Magician’s Studio. You’ll have to use your powers of perception and problem solving skills to find your way out of this tricky situation.

BOX BATTLE

box battle

Alright, so here’s the plan. You have from now until camp to build armor, swords, tanks, ships, catapults, or whatever else you can manage to bring with you for an all out box battle. On the evening before each session ends, we’ll have an all out battle until nothing remains.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t be an asshole. It’ll get a little rough out there, but this is not a blank check to start throwing punches, or taking actions that are intended to hurt other players; which brings me to my next point.
  2. This is pretty dumb, and you may get hurt. If you want eye protection or a helmet, bring it. You’ve signed the waiver and are on your own for any injuries you sustain during camp. Some activities carry inherent risk, and this is one of those.
  3. Box Battle is BYOB (bring your own boxes). You’ll be busy with regular camp activities, and won’t really have time to create something big from scratch during camp. Also, we cannot logistically provide enough cardboard for everyone to build their dreams out of cardboard. Build it at home, assemble/finish it at camp. This is kind of a bummer for people flying in, so if you have your heart set on participating, I suggest joining our Facebook Group, then asking if someone is willing to bring some extra boxes to camp, and working on it in the evenings.
  4. PLEASE REUSE BOXES FOR THIS! Don’t go out and buy new boxes. There are plenty around that friends, family, and even stores would be happy to unload on you.
  5. Nobody really “wins” at Box Battle. It’s kind of like one of those sand art mandalas. You spend a lot of time making something impressive and beautiful, then destroy it. There is beauty in the breakdown.

Start hoarding those Amazon boxes and planning how to transport a cardboard tank to camp….
